Airbnb Aircover Roles: Art Direction, Character Design In 2022 I Art Directed this award winning spot with the team at Buck. I also had the opportunity to take lead on some character design as well. We took a unique approach and really leaned in to this miniature tactile world by fabricating and designing physical miniature sets that were filmed and then composited using 3D character animation. The art direction and style of this spot set the foundation for all the subsequent spots in the ongoing series.
I designed a little over half of the characters and these are some of my favorites.As an Art Director, getting to see these sets being built and then existing in a physical space was a unique joy. You can see the incredible detail work from concept to physical creation. The sets were filmed in studio and then our cast of characters were crafted in 3D and composited on top of the footage. Detail in regards to scale was extremely important to make sure that the characters felt like they were from the same world as the sets. Textures and fabrics were meticulously thought out and scaled to appear as they would if they were crafted onto a physical miniature.
