 We the People








Roles: Vizdev, Story, DesignIn 2021 I was a member of the production team for the Episode “We the People” of the animated series “We The People”, in collaboration with Janelle Monae, Barack and Michelle Obama, and directed by Oscar winner Everett Downing Jr. As one of the primary designers, I had a hand in most every part of the project including style frames, character design, visdev, animation concepting and storyboards. Everett had a vision of a paper cut world and we wanted to take that vision and create something that not only felt like paper but had a dimensional quality beyond the 2D flatness of paper. Relying primarily on 3D + shaders and selective cel animation we developed this paper cut world set in motion to the sound of Janelle’s voice.

I went heavy in the character design on this one, designing most of the background and secondary characters. For the main characters I led the exploration on scale fidelity, creating a sliding scale of detail depending on how far away from camera the characters are.


Crowd exploration was a key part of the narrative as it serves as both a visual language and a character itself. The image to the left was the first image that clicked in illustrating the crowd. After a ton of visdev we ended up in a different place than this image but it started here.
